If you’ve ever had sunglasses slide down your nose or sit on your cheeks, you’ll know how frustrating it can be. Many people simply assume that’s just how sunglasses are supposed to fit.
Earlier this year, that exact problem ended up being discussed on national television.
In January, I responded to a media call-out looking for people running a side hustle. Hyesun technically fits that description. I run a brand and marketing studio, and this sunglasses brand is something I’ve been building alongside it.
The story was first picked up in digital news and I was interviewed by The Courier Mail and The Daily Telegraph. Shortly after, I was invited to speak about the business live on the Today Show.
Daunting AF this was an amazing opportunity for Hyesun. Every bit of visibility helps more people discover Hyesun, especially those who have struggled with sunglasses sliding down their nose or sitting on their cheeks. Many customers have told me they didn’t realise a better fit even existed until they came across the brand.
My theory on why it unfolded this way is fairly simple. When journalists looked up the brand, there was already a story online.
For over 12 months I’ve been sharing the process of building Hyesun on social media and bringing people along for the ride. Before we even opened for sales in July last year, I spent six months simply talking about the brand, the problem we’re solving, and the journey of developing the product.
I’ve kept doing that since launch. As a small business owner, social media can take a lot of energy, but it’s also one of the fastest advantages we have. It allows small brands to move quickly, share ideas, and build awareness without waiting for someone else to open the door. So I’m grateful for all the cringe moments of putting myself out there online.
I’m also incredibly grateful to the people who have helped bring the brand to life through content. From creators who have collaborated with us to social media managers who have helped shape what you see online, building a brand like this is never a one-person job.
My guess is our active social media probably gave me a small edge when it came to selecting someone to feature.
You never really know who might be watching.
A small personal note: this all happened to fall on my partner’s birthday, so thank you to Ryan for sharing the day.
Experiences like this are a great reminder to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Whether that’s in life or in business, consistency has a way of paying off.
And if that means a few more people discover sunglasses that finally fit properly, then it’s a win.
